The figure in the back of the Toyota pick-up clung to the custom-mounted .50 caliber machine gun as the truck bounced along the dirt road toward the ambush site. The carpet felt soft under his bare feet. He stepped quietly so as not to wake anyone and crept across the landing toward the staircase. He lowered himself down and sat on the soft carpet of the landing with his feet on the first of the wooden steps.
